In Brooklyn, It Takes a Village

Crime in New York, like much of the city's life, is becoming starkly divided by race and class: Even as the NYPD wins well-deserved praise for wrestling the rate of murder to 40-year lows, killings and shootings are rising ominously in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, Ocean Hill-Brownsville and East New York.

Homicides are up 100% this year in Bushwick's 83rd Precinct and up 63% in the 81st, which covers Bed-Stuy. Brownsville's 73rd Precinct shows a 33% increase in murders so far this year.

The press - and the media-hungry pols who flatter and feed off them - has largely avoided telling this tale of two cities, leaving hundreds of thousands of Brooklynites feeling abandoned, alarmed and forced to find their own way out.
