From the NY Post police blotter, Saturday 9/6/08:

A suspect has been charged with murdering a 63-year-old woman inside her Crown Heights apartment last month, police said yesterday.

Slay charge for handyman

A drug-addled handyman was charged with murder Thursday in the beating death of a churchgoing Brooklyn woman, police said.

Anthony Cuyler, 50, worked in the Ebbets Field Houses, where 63-year-old Katrine Anderson was found slain in her apartment Aug. 29.

Police sources said Cuyler tried to blame the victim, claiming the soft-spoken Baptist was drunk, swung at him and hit her head when he pushed her away.

"He lied. She was just nice to him. He was the one intoxicated. Her face, she looked like she had gone rounds with a boxer," a police source said.

The custodian then removed Anderson's blood-splattered T-shirt, sofa slipcovers and a bottle of wine from the apartment.

2 Neighborhood Teenagers Surrender in Brooklyn Boy’s Shooting

By Christine Hauser

NY Times, 7/7/08

There were nearly a dozen spent bullet casings, a bicycle and an abandoned sneaker. There were also angry neighbors wanting to know who could have fired the shot that hit a 9-year-old boy in the head, and why.

The boy, Shamshawan Kelly, was hit in the head by crossfire on Monday night outside his building at the Weeksville Gardens Houses in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. By Wednesday, the search for suspects was over, and it ended with a surrender.

The police said that Luis Gonzalez, 18, who lives in the same building as Shamshawan, turned himself in on Tuesday afternoon accompanied by a lawyer, and that another suspect, Johnathan Frazier, 18, of nearby Bergen Street, went to the police with his mother that night.

They face charges of attempted murder, assault, and weapons possession, said Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.

Mr. Kelly said that a third youth, Franklin Gillespie, 17, of Dean Street near Albany Avenue, was arrested on an unrelated robbery charge. While he did not fire any shots outside Shamshawan's building, he played a central role in the events that led to the gunfight, according to an account given to the police.

Boy, 9, Struck In Head By Stray Bullet In Brooklyn

Shamshawan Kelly Shot Outside His Home
While Playing On The Street

Community Says It Has Had It With Gun Violence

WCBS-TV

A 9-year-old Brooklyn boy continues to fight for his life after he was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle outside his home।

Neighbors say they are fed up with the violence. The community is coming together over this awful tragedy.

On Tuesday night on Pacific Avenue, where 9-year-old Shamshawan Kelly was shot in the crossfire, hundreds gathered to pray for his recovery.

"And so we are praying that you raise him out of that bed and make him better than ever before," one neighbor said to the crowd.

Kelly's brother said the gatherings are making a difference.

"You think the chips are down things like this … people like ya'll show me why life and love is important," John Flocker said.

Just after 9 p.m. on Monday on the sidewalk outside the Weeksville Houses where Kelly lives, a gunfight broke out between two men.

Kelly was shot in the head by a stray bullet. The heartless gunmen took off, leaving the young boy bleeding on the ground.

His story has the city demanding change.

"Tragedy... This is a child who should be in school in four weeks, now we pray the child just lives," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Jackie Rowe Adams of Harlem Mothers SAVE had a message for the community.

"Young people listen to me. Stop with these guns. If you see something say something. It's not snitching. It's saving a life," Adams said.

Community advocates urged the neighborhood to take control of their streets, embrace their children and vow to protect their future.

While Shamshawan Kelly's condition is improving, his family is facing yet another challenge. They have no medical insurance to pay for his hospital bills. The community is establishing a fund at Carver Bank to help them with their financial struggle.

Boy shot dead outside Bed-Stuy apts.

By Tanangachi Mfuni and Ethan Rouen
NY Daily News, Sat. 7/29/08

A popular Brooklyn teenager who hoped to go to college was shot dead as he sat on a bench with a pal outside a Bedford-Stuyvesant housing project Friday, police and relatives said.

The youth, identified by his family as Bertrand Jocelyn, 17, took one bullet in the head at 7:37 p.m. His unidentified friend escaped unharmed. The shooter fled and was at large Friday night.

Word of the teen's death spread quickly through the Sumner Houses, drawing more than 100 people to a candlelight vigil at the bench where he died. Most of those in the gathering were young people who placed candles on and around the bench and left flowers and messages.

Jocelyn's father, Louis, 63, a Haitian immigrant, struggled to cope with his youngest child's killing, saying several times, "Please don't use the word 'dead.'"

Kidson George, 26, took two bullets to the chest as he stood on the porch of a friend's Crown Heights home, his blood spraying fellow partygoers and sending screaming children dashing for cover, witnesses said.

"There were a bunch of kids outside on the porch who witnessed the whole thing," said the party's host, a friend of the dead man who asked to be identified by his stage name, D.J. Ice.

Shots fired in Bed-Stuy (79th Precinct)

A reader sends this note:

About 8 shots just popped off right now between the time of 1-1:30pm, Sat. night, June 28. This would be in the vic. of Nostrand Ave. & Putnam/Jefferson.

I called 911 and reported hearing these shots.

I just wanted a record to be out there somewhere in cyberspace, because sometimes I feel like... a tree is falling in the forest and no one is hearing it and therefore... it doesn't exist!

BY DORIAN BLOCK and XANA O'NEILL
NY DAILY NEWS Sunday 6/22/08

An 11-year-old boy was shot in a Brooklyn playground by another youth after an event at the adjacent school Saturday night, police and witnesses said.

The boy was with his family in front of the Woods Playground attached to Public School 335 in Crown Heights when he was shot in the knee about 10:30 p.m., police said.

The owner of a trucking company across Rochester Ave. from the school said one of his workers saw a teenage boy load a gun behind a truck just before the shooting.

"The shooter went behind the truck, loaded the gun, and the driver called 911 before he got a shot off," said Tommy Cuccurullo, owner of F & I Trucking.

"It happened so fast. Once he shot him, he ran down Rochester," Cuccurullo said.

It was unclear whether the bullet was intended for the victim or someone else.

The Emergency Medical Service brought the 11-year-old boy to Kings County Hospital. The injury was not life-threatening, police said.

Tot sees mom slashed to death

A Brooklyn mom strapping her baby boy into his car seat for a trip to a day care center was viciously murdered Monday by her boyfriend, cops said.

Police sources said Aisha Bristol, 27, was slashed across her throat about 7 a.m. on Hart St. near Lewis Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant by a man who later called police and confessed to the killing - before ingesting poison.

Cops found the mom lying dead next to the Toyota Yaris with a bloody kitchen knife nearby, as her 1-year-old son Nehemiah sat in his car seat.

"It's too much to take in," said Bristol's cousin, Roberta Smith, 29. "Right now we're just mourning."

Law enforcement sources said the suspect in the murder is a personal trainer.

Smith said Bristol met the man about a year ago at a gym but wasn't aware the two were romantically involved. She said the man often trained Bristol at her Pulaski St. apartment.
