Crime is down around city, but Brooklyn hit by several shootings

BY Mike Mclaughlin and Ben Chapman, NY DAILY NEWS

Crime is down so far this year across the city, but some Brooklyn neighborhoods have seen a surge of shootings, NYPD statistics show.

There were 240 gunshot victims in South Brooklyn through early October, up from 179 during the same period in 2008 because of a spike in violence in Crown Heights, East Flatbush and Coney Island.

"You hear gun shots all night long around here," said Dwayne Knowles, 55, of Coney Island. "Hell yes, it's getting worse."

The murder of Jayden Lenescar

BY Scott Shifrel, Henrick Karoliszyn, Joe Kemp and Larry Mcshane

NY DAILY NEWS

The mother of a 4-year-old Brooklyn boy brutally beaten to death was arrested with her boyfriend Saturday night for the savage slaying of her child, police said.

Myrna Chen Phang, 25, and her beau, Steven Dadaille, 26, were charged with pummeling Jayden Lenescar with blows during a two-day beatdown that left him dead Friday afternoon, law enforcement sources said.

The 3-foot-9, 54-pound preschooler was pounded on his slight torso, his thin arms and his legs - the couple using their fists to inflict the damage, the law enforcement sources said.

The medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide, with an autopsy finding Jayden died of blunt force trauma.

Phang and Dadaille, her boyfriend of two months, implicated each other in the child's ghastly death, according to sources.

Each gave finger-pointing written and video statements asserting their innocence and blaming the other before police charged both of them with the murder, sources said.

It was unclear what set off the relentless beatings that ended with Phang calling 911 from her Crown Heights apartment on her birthday.
