Despite security cameras, cops miss Brooklyn public housing rape

A Brooklyn woman was raped for a half-hour in a public housing stairwell bristling with security cameras, and the NYPD is investigating whether cops monitoring the live video somehow missed the attack, police sources told the Daily News.

"Either they saw it and did nothing, which seems hard to believe, even for this unmotivated crew. Or they were busy looking at something else. Or they were asleep, which seems most likely," said a police source familiar with the lapse.

Some 224 cameras cover the Van Dyke Houses in Brownsville, where Thursday's attack took place, feeding live images into 30 television monitors. Each camera image flashes for seven seconds on a monitor before moving to the next one, sources said.

The knife-wielding predator was caught on various cameras following the woman into an elevator, and then forcing her up the stairs, sources said.

Full story here. Police are asking the public for help in finding the rapist; details and sketch are in this earlier post.
