A random victim, a mother walking to her Crown Heights building early Saturday evening, is caught in crossfire between gunmen intent on offing each other's sorry lives. And we recall how common such violence once was. And we are relieved that every neighborhood has benefited from a historic drop in crime. Including Crown Heights and the surrounding communities.
But the murder of Carol Simon, 35, as her 9-year-old son waited in the family's SUV, highlights a dangerous trend across much of Brooklyn.
